GB 3.991 Shales Charlotte
Improvements in tatting shuttles and in the mode of winding thread thereon. Hitherto tatting shuttles have been supplied with thread by winding the same between the blades of said shuttle, causing more or less injury to the thread in passing between the points of the shuttle. By my improvements this is entirely obviated, the points of the shuttle are less liable to injury, and the winding of the thread is also considerably facilitated. According to the 1st of my improvements I make the shuttle solid and at the centre of the same I form a slot for receiving an ordinary spool containing thread. This spool is free to revolve on its axis in the shuttle and is introduced therein by removing one side of the shuttle which is hinged or otherwise jointed thereto and afterwards replaced in position. A spring bearing on the spool may be introduced to regulate the delivery of the thread. This latter arrangement is applicable to existing shuttles. My 2nd improvement relates to an improved mode of winding the thread on the shuttle itself and consists in mounting a spool permanently in a slot in the shuttle, which is solid as before. The spool is supplied with thread by rotating the same by means of a winch handle applied to its axis when it is required to wind thread thereon. This last improvement is also applicable to existing shuttles. A third improvement consists in combining the needle or hook also employed in tatting with the shuttle by recessing it in a slide in the latter at either end, from which it is projected when required and withdrawn again within the shuttle after use. Printed, 4d. No Drawings.
Provisional protection only. December 31, 1868
